Death called Blessing After 22-Year Coma
Pokl,Pa. (AP) -- After spending nearly half her life in a world devoid of awareness; death came to 50-year old Janet Shouse.
Janet fell into a coma April 23, 1951, when she was injured after falling from a moving car, she was 6 then.
She spent the rest of her life in a coma, incapable of speaking. At death she weighed 85 pounds.
"It's hard to say whether she ever comprehended anything," said Dr. James H McClelland, superintendent of Polk State Hospital, where Janet died Tuesday. "The only part of her body she could ever move was her head. She had to be spoon-fed.
Death was attributed to pneumonia. She is survived by her parents, Mr & Mrs. Rudolph Shouse, and a sister.
"She was one of those cases that break your heart," said Dr. McClelland, "where life is sacred, but death would be a blessing. And there wasn't anything anyone could do."
