Victoria Cross Recipient. A native of Oldham, Lancashire, England, he joined The Manchester Regiment of the British Army in 1917. On December 11 of that year, he was manning a position at Red Dragon Crater near Givenchy, France, when a strong enemy patrol attempted to rush the post after a gas attack. In spite of being badly gassed himself, Mills met the attack single-handed, continuously throwing bombs until reinforcements arrived, and remaining at his post until the enemy attack had been driven off. According to his citation, "It was entirely due to his exertions that the enemy was defeated and the line was completely retained. It was whilst he was being carried to a Medical Station that he died."
