General Joseph McClure, Jr. was born on May 14, 1775 in Belchertown, Worcester County, Massachusetts, son of Joseph McClure, Sr.(1744 Scotland -?) & his wife Rebecca Densmore (1742 - ?). He was educated early in life in the medical profession, but he dislike it, so he went on to do other things.

Joseph married 11/18/1793 in Dwight, Worchester County, Massachusetts: Betsey Grice (1776 - ), in Massachusetts. They came to Franklinville & located in the Village. He was a surveyor & agent for the Holland Land Company.

The FIRST SETTLER IN FRANKLINVILLE,CATTARAUGUS COUNTY, NY. Originally called MCCLURE'S SETTLEMENT, as Joseph & his family: included his wife Betsey, 4 children, his parents (Joseph,Sr & Rebecca),his brother Benjamin McClure(1776 -1832) his cousin David McClure (1778-1848)(who then moved to Ischua,NY just south of Franklinville)

Joseph, Jr. was a Veteran in the War of 1812, as a Captain @ Dobbin's, NY Militia. Capt in 1807, Major in 1815,
Colonel in 1816 & later became a General in the NY MILITIA.
He rescued a bugler named: Burns after he had deserted the British Army, by swimming across the Niagara River to the American side.

Joseph McClure,Jr. was in the Assembly of New York State & represented Niagara, Chautauqua & Cattaraugus Counties, the three counties forming one district 1814-1815. He was also County Clerk in 1821.

Originally he & his family were buried in the McClure Family Plot, south of their farm, but the graves were moved to Mt. Prospect Cemetery.

General Joseph McClure the pioneer of McClure's Settlement
came to the area in 3/1806 with his wife & their five children. Born in Belchertown, Massachusetts on May 14, 1775 married Betsey Grice in 1804 & moved to Angelica, NY with his wife and family. His skill and accuracy in surveying soon attracted attention of Joseph Ellicott, the principal agent of the Holland Land Company. In the spring of 1806 Joseph and his family journeyed and cutting his own road through the wilderness, distance of 30 miles and set the family down in the Ischua Valley in 3/1806.Franklinville(McClure's Settlement)was nearly the center of several surrounding Tribes of Indians. "The Alleganies" on the southwest,"The Tonawandas" on the north part"The Squakie Hill's, Gardow's and The Canaedeas on the northeast part.. Page 633: McClure's settlement continued to 1824 when the name was changed to "Franklinville", in honor of Benjamin Franklin.
