Mary A. Less Mitchell, 96, of Erie, Pennsylvania, died Wednesday, September 26, 2012, at Sunrise Senior Living following a brief illness. She was born in Greenford, OH, July 6, 1916, daughter of the late Anthony and Mary Schwind Less.
She was a graduate of the St. Elizabeth Hospital School of Nursing in Youngstown, and received a B.S. in Nursing from St. Mary's of the Springs College in Columbus, OH. Early in her nursing career she was employed at St. Elizabeth's in Youngstown, at Huron Road Hospital, Cleveland, and as a microbiology instructor in Brattleboro, VT. She was later employed for several years as a representative of the S. H. Camp Co., makers of surgical supports and garments, covering a territory in the Greater Mid-West.
Mrs. Mitchell was a member of St. Luke Catholic Church, and was active for many years in the Mothers of Twins Club and the Erie Maennerchor Women's Auxiliary.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George J. Mitchell; a son, U. S. Army Capt. David G. Mitchell, who was killed in action in Vietnam; and six brothers, Raymond, Joseph, Francis, Paul, Leo, and John Less.
Survivors include three daughters, Anne Peck and her husband Reese, of Pleasanton, CA, Christine Mitchell of Sebring, OH, and Mary Bentzoni and her husband, Wesley, of Lakeview, NY; two sons, Matthew Mitchell and his wife, Ann, of Pittsburgh, and Mark Mitchell and his wife, Susan, of Erie; a brother-in-law, Jerome L. Mitchell and his wife Helen of Erie; three sisters-in-law, Mrs. A. J. (Elizabeth) John of North Dartmouth, MS., Mrs. Charles A. (Peggy) Mitchell of Erie, and Mrs. George (Dawn Laughlin) Levin of Maryville, TN; a daughter-in-law, Susan Lyons Mitchell Flaherty of Erie; eleven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
