Malinda Graves Haley was born in 1808 probably in Roane County, Tennessee, the daughter of David Haley, Jr. (1760-1839)and his wife, Elizabeth Graves (1767-1815) who married in 1783. This information was provided by Malinda's brother, David W. Haley in a letter written in 1854 and available on Heritage Quest. She was described by family members as wearing no jewelry except for a simple breast pin due to her religious beliefs. Malinda G. Haley married Thomas Jefferson Coffee on July 17, 1827 in Hinds County, Mississippi. She appeared by name on only one census at the age of 39 in 1850 for Brazoria County, Texas, with her husband Thomas J. and children, Aaron-17, Ellen-15, Ambrose-12, Henry-10 and Roxana-7. Their eldest daugher Minerva had already married and was no longer in the household in 1850. Malinda Coffee also helped raise a nephew, James Edmondson, the son of her husband's sister.
