Roxana Coffee was the youngest child of Thomas Jefferson and Malinda G. Coffee, appearing on the 1850 census in their household at the age of seven. She married William Wilson Ward in Brazoria County on January 18, 1860. The Ward family was listed on the 1860 census as follows: William, 22, was born in Alabama with real estate valued at $30,640, and personal estate valued at $59,800; Anna, 17, was born in Mississippi. Unfortunately, Roxanna died seven months after their marriage, on August 22, 1860. William Ward’s will, dated August 28, 1861, mentioned his deceased wife Roxana, and stated that he had inherited 325 acres on Oyster Creek which was her portion of the Coffee estate. He felt the need to write his will because he was “about to join the Army of the Confederate States of America.” William Ward was killed at Murfreesboro on December 31, 1862 as a member of Terry’s Texas Ranger Company B.
