THE LIFE OF BROTHER DANIEL J. HAMMIE, JR.
Mr. Daniel J. Hammie, Jr., son of the late Daniel J. Hammie, Sr. and Effie Miles Hammie, was born June 1, 1921, in the Dabney Community of Vance County, North Carolina. He went to be with the Lord on Wednesday morning, November 2, 2011.
He received his education in the Vance and Wake County Public Schools. While he took on various jobs in his long life, he prided himself with having worked independently as a Landscaper. Daniel loved being outside so he could grow gardens, manicure lawns and grow beautiful flowers. Even while he was a resident of the Carrington Place of Chesapeake, he was known as the "Yardsman who planted beautiful flowers."
He was united in Holy matrimonty to Elizabeth Hammie who preceded him in death; to this union, no children were born.
For some sixty years, he resided in Virginia (Norfolk, Suffolk, Portsmouth and Chesapeake). While there, he befriended many and established lifelong friendships. At an early age, he became a part of the family church, Ruin Creek Baptist Church, and continued to grow in grace and the admonition of the Lord by uniting with Union Baptist Church in Suffolk, Virginia under the Pastorate of Rev. C.V. Russell, Sr., where he served as a Deacon. Later, he united with New Light Full Gospel Baptist Church in Virginia Beach, Virginia under the Pastorate of Dr. Rudolph B. Lewis, Sr. In his later years, he faced many health challenges and became a permanent resident of Chesapeake Rehabilitation and Assistive Care Facility in 2007. Desiring to be near family, his nephew made that possible by relocating him to North Carolina, first to Britthaven Nursing Home in February 2010 and then to Senior Citizens Home in July 2010.
His life was made fuller and richer, when he returned to North Carolina to be once again around close family and to establish new friendships. While he was quick to introduce himself to others as "Dan" or "Ham", he loved to talk, to do some reading and writing, and would watch a little television every now and then.
He leaves to cherish his memories; a sister, Mrs. Marie H. Ratliff of Raleigh, NC; a special nephew who became his advocate and main caretaker, Rev. Joseph Ratliff (Charlene) of Henderson, NC; many nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.
LIFE IS BUT A STOPPING PLACE
Life is but a stopping place,
A pause in what's to be,
A resting place along the road,
To sweet eternity.
We all have different journeys,
Different paths along the way.
We all were meant to learn some things,
But never meant to stay...
Our destination is a place,
Far greater than we know.
For some the journey's quicker,
For some the journey's slow.
And when the journey finally ends,
We'll claim a great reward,
And find an everlasting peace,
Together with the Lord.
