Mrs. Allie Mae Belle, age 96, passed into eternal rest on Friday, August 1, 2008, at Brown's Health and Rehabilitation Center under the care of Ogeechee Area Hospice in Statesboro. She was a native of Bulloch County, and was raised by foster parents, the late H.W.B. Smith Sr. and Amanda Love Smith, from a very early age to her adult life. In this family were two other children, Valeria Smith Simmons (deceased) and H.W.B. Smith Jr. (deceased). She was educated in the public schools of Bulloch County and attended Clark College, Atlanta, and Georgia State College (presently Savannah State University).
She moved from Statesboro to Cleveland, Ohio, where she spent the major part of her adult life, and where she met and married James D. Belle of Cleveland, Ohio, who preceded her in death. She worked during this period of time at the Cleveland Foundation Clinic, where she was foreman of its laundry. She moved back to Statesboro in the fall of 1975 and became active in civic and social activities of the community. She was a member of Brannen Chapel United Methodist Church, where she became a member of the United Methodist Women, and served as a communion steward. She was also a member of the Royal Savings Club and worked tirelessly with the American Cancer Society Crusades and other organizations.
She leaves to cherish fond memories to a sister-in-law, Mrs. Sarah Ayers Smith of Statesboro; two nephews, Dr. Henry W.B. Smith III (Cheryl) of Greensboro, N.C., and Roderick Ayers Smith (Nannette) of Riverdale, Ga.; a host of other relatives and friends.
The funeral service will be held on Saturday, August 9th, at 11 a.m. at Brannen Chapel United Methodist Church located on Elm Street in Statesboro. The Rev. Donald Mathis, pastor/eulogist. Interment will be in the Eastside Cemetery. Service of comfort entrusted to the care of Craig R. Tremble Funeral Home, Inc.
