World War I Victoria Cross Recipient. He received the award from British King George V on March 23, 1918 at Buckingham Palace in London, England for his actions as a captain in the 3rd Battalion, The Durham Light Infantry of the British Army on December 3, 1917 at Masnieres, France during World War I. Born in Streatham, London, England, he served in the South African Army from 1902 until 1915 where he attained the rank of quartermaster sergeant. In 1915 he transferred to The Durham Light Infantry of the British Army at the rank of captain and saw action at the Western Front, including the Battle of Cambrai, France where he was wounded and awarded the Victoria Cross for gallantry. After personally receiving the award, he returned to the Western Front and was killed in action at Fontaine, France, just three days before the signing of the armistice that brought an end to the war. His Victoria Cross citation reads: "On 3 December 1917 at Masnieres, France, during a very heavy bombardment Captain Lascelles, although wounded, continued to encourage his men and organize the defence until the attack was driven off. Shortly afterwards the enemy attacked again and captured the trench, taking several prisoners. Captain Lascelles at once jumped onto the parapet and followed by his 12 remaining men rushed across under very heavy machine-gun fire and drove over 60 of the enemy back. Later the enemy attacked again and captured the trench and Captain Lascelles, who later managed to escape in spite of having received two further wounds." His Victoria Cross and other medals (Military Cross (South Africa), 1914-15 Star, British War Medal, and Victory Medal (1914-19)) are on display at the Durham Light Infantry Museum and Art Gallery in Durham, County Durham, England.
