Rebecca McElroy Kerr, eldest daughter of Rev. Gilbreath Lawson Kerr and the former Miss Margaret Eugenia McElroy, was born in Millersburg, Kentucky; where her father was minister.

By the age of 3, Rebecca's family moved to Broad River in York County, South Carolina. Here, a baby sister, Margaret, joined the family. Young Margaret died several months later and followed a year later by her mother; leaving Rebecca and her father to grieve.

In 1914, Rev. Kerr married Miss Eleanor Martin; whom Rebecca grew to know as her mother, along with her half brother Russell and sister Mary.

In 1929, Rebecca Kerr graduated from Due West Women's College with a teaching degree. She would for the next 45 years devote her life to the education field; primarily at Harry P. Harding High School in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Rebecca McElroy Kerr departed this life on the 27th of December 1984 in the 77th year of her age. She was laid to rest at Prosperity Cemetery beside her mother and sister, not far from her maternal grandparents, John and Rebecca McElroy for whom she was named.
