Gilbreth educated at Coddle Creek Academy, he went on to Erskine College in Due West; graduating in 1900. He continued at Erskine Theologian Seminary and was ordained an Associate Reformed Presbyterian minister upon completion of his studies in 1904.
Rev. Kerr was twice married; his first wife was Miss Margaret Eugenia McElroy (1880-1911) a granddaughter of Rev. John McElroy. Margaret grew up in Doraville, Georgia. They met when Rev. Kerr was minister of Doraville A.R.P. church. Margaret and Gilbreth had two daughters:

After Maragret died in 1911, he married Miss Eleanor Martin. This union was blessed with two children: (1892-1980)
