Alpine, Texas resident and former Animas, New Mexico rancher and Cotton City farmer Bert J. Upshaw Sr. 83, died September 19, 2012 at Big Bend Regional Medical Center.

A memorial service will be held on September 27th at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, FM 1703, Sunny Glen Rd., Alpine, TX 79830. The funeral services will be held at the Animas, New Mexico Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at 23 Church Road in Cotton City on September 29th at 10:00 am with Bishop Archie Payne conducting.

Bert was born November 29, 1928 in Hachita, New Mexico to Tom and Myrtle Upshaw. He was raised on their ranch near Cloverdale, New
Mexico he started grade school at Cloverdale and attended there through the eighth grade and then Animas High School, graduating Salutatorian of his class in 1946. He enjoyed sports, playing basketball and tennis in high school and throughout his life. He married his sweetheart, Lordsburg resident, Thelma M. Richins on March 10, 1950. They celebrated 62 years of marriage this year. He served in the New Mexico Army National Guard and was called up during the Korean Conflict. He was honorably discharged on June 3, 1952.

He farmed and ranched in the Animas Valley until 1979 when he moved his family to Texas to work in the Aloe Vera business. He later worked for Tyson Foods as a quality control supervisor until his retirement in 2005 at the age of 77 when he moved to Alpine, Texas where he resided for the rest of his life.

He was baptized as a member of The Church in February 1953. He served three stake missions and held numerous callings including a several years as 1st Counselor to Bishop Archie Payne in the Animas Ward during the late 1960's and early 1970's. He was an active member of the Alpine, Texas Branch from 2005 until his death.

Bert was preceded in death by his parents Tom and Myrtle and his two older brothers, Willie and Joe, and a great-granddaughter Rhyan Ray Upshaw, he is survived by his wife Thelma, his sister Ida Bohling of Santa Teresa, NM, his children BJ (Bert Jr.), Rick, Mark, Gary, Dell and Ilynn and his sister-in-law Mary Upshaw of Southlake TX, numerous cousins, nephews and nieces, 29 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren.

The family expresses special gratitude for the far beyond the call of duty care to Dr. Adrian Billings he gave Bert during the past several years, and during the last few hours the loving, tender attention given by the nurses and staff at Big Bend Regional Medical Center.
