Pfc. Jay J. Schrock of Rockwood Killed in Action in France

Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Schrock of Rockwood have received word from the War Department that on of their five sons in the service - Pfc. Jay J. Schrock, 25, a twin - was killed in action in France two days after D-Day June 8, 1944.

Pfc. Schrock was a personal friend of Pfc. John G. Nider of Somerset R. D. 3, who was badly wounded in the fighting at Normandy in June.; The two young men enlisted together and were sent overseas at the same time. They were stationed for a time in North Ireland and later moved to England. Pfc. Nider is now at a base hospital in England.

Pfc. Jay J. Schrock graduated from Rockwood High School and enlisted on January 23, 1941, at the same time as his twin brother, Raymond, who is a sergeant in the Coast Artillery stationed along the Atlantic Seaboard.

Other brothers in the service are Cpl. Robert, now with an infantry division overseas; Sgt. Donald, now stationed at Camp Pickett, Virginia, and Pvt. Earl, with the field artillery at Camp Van Dorn, Mississippi. The latter is the only brother who is married.

Pfc. Schrock leaves his parents, the five brothers mentioned and two other brothers and four sisters - Edward and James, both at home; Violet, wife of Frank Barclay, Rockwood; Verna, wife of William Barclay, Baltimore; Betty and Evelyn, both of Rockwood.

Jay Schrock is the second Rockwood boy to give his life for his country in World War II. The other was Pvt. Richard Pyle, who was killed in action in Sicily in August, 1943.
