Son of Cannady (Kennedy) Cooper and Susannah Keesie (Keese). Sibling to Martha, Cecilia, Susannah (Susan), Sarah, Mary, and Harriet who married James Calvin Delay.
His wife was a S.E. (unknown last name), and had a daughter Martha A, Cooper born 1859 in Bonham, Fannin County, Texas.

Served with brother-in-law James Delay in 9th and 25th TX Calvary. He enlisted with his brother-in-law on Oct. 14, 1861 at Camp Reeves, Texas, which is near Grayson. James A. Cooper family is present on the Fannin County, Texas Confederate Indigent List (with the DeLay's). The family received aid through the 1863 'Act to Support the Families and Dependents of Texas Soldiers Presume this means he died during the war, see below notes as being noted "sick" on all Muster Rolls. The last entry for him is Dec. 1862 - did he die in service? He has not been found on any future census after 1860 in Fannin County, Texas.
