William was injured in the battle of Champion Hill in the Civil War on May 16, 1863, and passed away from his injuries the next day May 17, 1863. He was buried on the Battle Field near Vicksburg Mississippi. William's name is on a Civil War Memorial that stands out side the Stephenson County Court house in Freeport, Illinois. William is mentioned in his brother Jonathan's obituary.

William's name is on east side of a 6 foot tall red granite headstone in the Bellview Cemetery. His Mother and fathers names are on the west side of the stone. His sister Mary is on the north side and there is Elizabeth on the south side of the stone. I haven't found out who she is yet,

From researching the battel field burials, it is most likely that William is in an unmarked grave on the battle field.
