Jacob started up and operated a combination furniture store and undertaking establishment on Main Street in Rockwood. Ellen had one child in 1895 with Jacob, my maternal grandmother Julia Day Snyder. Besides raising my grandmother, Ellen also helped run the furniture store, keeping the books.
Ellen's husband Jacob Snyder died from typhoid fever in 1911 (allegedly caught from a body he was transporting to his undertaking establishment, located on top of their furniture store). My grandmother Julia was 15 years old at the time. After his death, Ellen could not operate the businesses alone, and they were subsequently closed down. Despite this setback, Ellen was able to maintain the household in Rockwood while Julia finished high school and subsequently college circa 1918. In the 1920's, Ellen moved to Baltimore to live with her daughter Julia, and Julia's husband Garland B. Day. She remained with my grandmother Julia the rest of her life.
A great grandchild's remembrance: By the time I was old enough to remember her, my great grandmother Ellen, who was called "Nanny", was well into her 90's. She was not moving too well at this point, although she could get up and down stairs. What I remember most is her sitting in the rocking chair in my grandmother's house in north Baltimore. I still have the oak rocking chair she used to sit in. She died the day before my 7th birthday.
