Born in Swilly Mount, Drumboy, Co Donegal, Ireland, to Moses Houston and Margaret Chambers, the fourth of 10 children.
The Houstons attended the same Newtowncunningham Presbyterian church in Ireland as my gg grandfather David King, and both he and Moses Houston were on the governing board together.
When Joseph was 12 his father moved the entire family to Kansas, arriving in Philadelphia on 17 April 1885.
After 10 years they all moved to Montreal, where some of the older children had already settled.
Joseph worked first as a carpenter, then as a mining engineer for the St. Anthony's Gold Mine at Webbwood, Sables-Spanish Rivers. He settled near Haileybury, Temiskaming, Ontario, with his wife Margaret to raise their family.
