A Murder Happened in Hemlock.

Joanne Lynn Rites Set For Today.

Hemlock (AP) Joanne Lynn, 11, victim of an unsolved slaying, was to be buried at nearby Groveland this afternoon. Joanne's body was found Saturday off Route 15A on a farm between here and Lima. She had been shot twice. Dr. Melville A. Hare, Livingston County coroner, said she had been assaulted. The girl probably was slain the morning of Sept. 19, about two hours after she vanished on her way to Hemlock Central School, Dr. Hare said. Last night he issued a certificate of "homicide by firearms by unknown assailant or assailants." Lt. William M. Stevenson of the State Police said last night ballistics tests at the State Police laboratory in Albany showed two bullets came from a "well-kept" automatic pistol of one of five foreign makes. He added that it was hoped further tests would narrow the classification of the missing gun. The bullets were found by troopers, combing the ground around the spot where Norma Marsden, 11, found Joannie's body while gathering butternuts. Stevenson also reported analysis indicated that Joanne consumed no food after breakfast Sept. 19. District Attorney George D. Newton said last night that no one is in custody in connection with the case.

As of this day, the 17th of February 2020, this is still a cold case. The culprit has yet to be found, and given the ages of time, most likely never will be. Joanne's mother said, "God knows", and took some comfort in that knowledge, through her strong spiritual belief.
