A native of Zurich, Switzerland, he graduated in law from the University of Bern in 1953 and came to the United States in 1955.
He was married to Dorothy in Dallas, Texas in 1956 and the couple moved to Mill Valley, California the following year. Werner acquired a degree in accounting and worked as controller of several large firms in San Francisco and San Rafael until 1993 when he retired to Healdsburg. He had a love of forests and chose a home among firs, madrones and oaks. After retiring he devoted himself to his family, to his estate, to hiking and to the continued study of history and languages. He was fluent in Swiss, German, French, Italian, Spanish and English and could read and speak Russian well enough to travel there easily after the breakup of the Soviet Union.
He is survived by Dorothy, his wife of fifty years and by his three daughters and their families to all of whom he was very close. The eldest daughter, Catherine, is married to Mehdad Fard. They have two boys, Anousheh and Bijan, and live in Rohnert Park; the second daughter, Barbara, is married to Brandon Rankin. The Drs. Rankin live in Lodi and have three children, Nicholas, Holly, and Anna Belle. The third daughter, Heidi, is married to Jeffrey Abramson. They have one child, Amelia and live in Alamo. Werner will be greatly missed by all his family and by his many friends.
Funeral Services will be performed by Canon Marvin Bowers on Monday, July 3rd, 2006 at eleven AM at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 209 Matheson Street in Healdsburg. Flowers or a contribution in Werner's name may be sent to the church. Burial at Olive Hill Cemetery will follow the service.
