Obituary: Barrie Examiner, 18 Jun 1959, p. 5
The death of William Herbert Anderson occurred suddenly on May 30, 1959 following a coronary thrombosis at the Allandale Rooming House, the former Railway WMCA building, after he walked upstairs to his room.
Born in Lavender, Ontario on Aug. 31, 1892, he was the son of the late Albert and Sarah Jane Anderson and had lived there until he was 18 years of age. He then came to Allandale and started as a fireman with the GTR but, in two years time, changed over from the motive power and started as a brakeman, continued in that work for some time, became a conductor and completed 41 years in the service until retirement in 1952.
Surviving of his family are his widow, the former Maude Hubbard, one son, Randolph and there was another son, Truman, who died for the empire in Holland in World War 11. It is recalled that "Herb" had recently booked his passage for there with the intention of seeing the grave of his son and visiting some of the former war scenes.
There is also one sister (Wilhelmine), Mrs. Lawrence Cameron, and one grandson, David Anderson in Toronto.
William H. Anderson was of the United Church and was a member of the Brotherhood of Railway Trainmen. The funeral service on June 2, 1959, was held in the Jennett Funeral Home, Bradford Street, and was conducted by Rev. S. E. Lewis of Collier Street United Church. Many of his friends, former fellow employees of GTR and CNR, were present, also relatives from this district and from Toronto, Richmond Hill, Honeywood, New Lowell and Creemore.
Interment was later in the cemetery at Lavender and acting pallbearers were; Erman Horan, Norman Smith, Allan Hodgson, Bruce Pridham, Morris Hawkins, and Lawrence Cameron, all former employees of the CNR. With the lovely flowers from friends of the Allandale Rooming House and from Clark and Clarke, Barrie.
