Peckham Christian Church was filled to capacity and a similar sized crowd paid tribute outside the church when funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon, September 10 for Fred L. Anstine. Rev. A.M. Stocking, Arkansas City a boyhood friend of the deceased preached a most impressive service that left many comforting thoughts to the bereaved family. The floral pieces were many and beautiful. A mixed choir that furnished the music was composed of Mr. Martha Jansen, Mrs. L.S. Fester, Mrs. Verne Fester, Mrs. Herman Harp, J.W. Skinner, Jack Fender, C.C. Gassaway and Guy Whitaker, with Mrs. Ester Hunnecutt as pianist and John Albers Newkirk as soloist. Pallbearers were Clabe Trenary, Grover Brooks, Arnold Schlanger, L.F. Carroll, B.E. Tarpenning and Elmer Brown. Flower girls were Mary Alice Browning, Dorothy Parrish and Ruth Otey. Burial was in the Newkirk cemetery with the Hill Funeral Home of Newkirk in charge of the arrangements.
Fred LeRoy Anstine, son of Samuel and Eliza Anstine was born in Sumner County, Kansas near Gueda Spring, May 20, 1889 and departed this life September 8, 1935 at the Ponca City Hospital, Ponca City, Oklahoma. He grew to manhood in that vicinity and came with his parents to Pekham in 1911, having lived here the past 25 years, 16 years as operator and manager of the Peckham Telephone Exchange.
He was most devoted husband and father, a loyal neighbor and true friend. He always had a smile and a joke for everyone. No task was too hard or long for him to accomplish for a neighbor or friend.
His was an untimely death and shock to all his friends as he was a comparatively young man in good health, death coming from a mini9or injury that developed into tetanus poisoning at the age of 46 years, 3 months and 19 days.
He is survived by his widow Mrs. Lurene Anstine, two sons, Jack and Teddy Joe, Peckham; two daughters, Mrs. Eugene Cottrell, Arkansas City; and Patty Lou, of Peckham, three brothers Virgil G. Arkansas City; A.E. Anstine, Newkirk; W.S. Anstine, Clinton Mo., one sister Mrs. J.A. Richards, Arkansas City; a large number of nieces nephews and cousins and a large host of friends.
Peckham school was dismissed Tuesday afternoon in respect and for the funeral of Fred L. Anstine.
Mr. and Mrs. Hayward Green and son, Maborn of Ashton, came in Saturday morning to take charge of the telephone office, succeeding Fred Anstine whose death occurred Saturday. Green is the brother of Mrs. Lurene Anstine.
Out of town relatives who attended the Fred L. Anstine funeral in Peckham Tuesday afternoon were: A.E. Anstine, Newkirk; Mr. and Mrs. J.A. Richards and family, Arkansas City, W.S. Anstine and son, Alva, Clinton, Mo., Mr. and Mrs. V.G. Anstine and Mr. and Mrs. Verne Anstine and Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Richards, all of Arkansas City, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Anstine, Mrs. Melvin Anstine and Mrs. Nellie Lentz all of Ponca City, Mrs. A.E.Amend, Garden City, Kansas, Mr. and Mrs. George Dickason, Skiatook, Mr. and Mrs. Hayward Green and son, Ashton, Kansas, Mrs. Cassa Nickolson, Ashton and friends from a distance were Mr. and Mrs. W.A. Palmer and son, Barnsdall, Oklahoma, Velma and Ruth Otey, Kaw City.
