Harriet Bergin was born to John and Bridget (Gorman)Bergin in Bishop Auckland, County Durham in June 1867 (her tombstone says 1866 but her birth certificate says 1867). Her parents had come from Ireland to England in the 1850's so her father could work in the coal mines. Harriet had two older siblings that lived to adulthood, Mary Ann and John, Jr. She came to Pennsylvania with her sister, Mary Ann and Mary Ann's little son, Patrick, approx. 1884. Mary's husband, John Harkins had come over earlier. Harriet got a job as a maid in Philipsburg, Pennsylvania and was introduced to Samuel Ashurst through her friendship with Alice Ashurst, Samuel's sister.
Harriet and Sam had 9 children, of whom 8 survived at birth.(Robert, Mae, James, John, Loy, Mildred, Elizabeth, Vincent). One of Harriet's grand daughter's remembered her having a slight English accent and occassionally dancing an Irish jig! She was a Catholic. Half of the children were raised Episcopalian and the other half as Catholic.
Harriet died in a car accident in Ohio after she was returning to Barnesboro, Pa. from visiting her son, Loy, in Dayton, Ohio. She is buried next to Samuel.
