Falls to Death

Santa Monica, Calif., April 1. -- Isaac W. Bernheim, 96, founder and former president of the Bernheim Distilling Company of Louisville, fell to death tonight from his eighth floor apartment here.
Police reported that Robert Paul, his secretary for 18 years, and his housekeeper, Mrs. Mary E. Kahler, told them that Bernheim was in his bedroom alone at the time.
No notes were found, police said.
Bernheim has been spending his winters here for several years.
Headed Foundation.
He headed the I. W. Bernheim Foundation at Louisville and since his retirement many years ago had devoted his time to charitable work.
He was a native of Germany and came to the United States when a young man and founded the distillery in 1872.
He leaves three daughters, Mrs. Millie B. Rauh, Mrs. Marguerite B. Block and Mrs. Helen B. Roth, all of Cincinnati, and one son, Dr. Bertram Bernheim of Baltimore, Md.
Burial will be in Louisville.

Leaps To His Death.
Isaac W. Bernheim, founder of the Bernheim Distilling Co., Louisville, leaped to his death Sunday from the eighth floor of his ocean-front apartment house in Santa Monica, Calif., Cincinnati relatives were notified yesterday. He had been despondent over an eye ailment, it was said.
Mr. Bernheim, who was 96 years old, was born in Germany. He gave the money in 1889 for the erection of Hebrew Union College Library.
Surviving Mr. Bernheim are three daughters, Mrs. Albert S. Roth, Mrs. Robert L. Block and Mrs. Julian S. Rauh, all of Cincinnati, and a son, Dr. Bertram N. Bernheim, Baltimore.
Mr. Bernheim moved to Cincinnati 20 years ago after his retirement from the distilling business. He later moved to California. Burial is to be in Louisville..

Originally interred at Cave Hill Cemetery in Louisville, Kentucky. Grave moved to Bernheim Forest in 1956.
