The Obituary notice in the 1 March 1897 edition of The Kansas City Journal identifies Nina as the daughter of the photographer T. D. Saunders, living at the same Kansas City address at the time of her death. The Lexington Intelligencer, however, identifies Nina as the daughter of Luther and Fannie Saunders. Thomas D. Saunders and his wife Julia Clarissa Meanea Saunders were born in 1831 and 1841, respectively, which casts doubt on the accuracy of the report that Nina, born in 1895, was their daughter. The 1880 Federal Census shows that Thomas and Julia had a son, Luther, born 1867. Luther C. Saunders married Fannie L. Hill in October 1886. The 1896 Kansas City Directory shows Luther C. Saunders in a photo business with T. D. Saunders, retired. The 1900 Directory shows Luther as the sole proprietor of the business, after T. D. died in 1898. It seems likely that Luther Saunders and his wife Fannie were Nina's parents and that T. D. Saunders and his wife Julia would have been Nina's grandparents.
