Carolyn "Marge" Dunbar Yancey, born February 10, 1921, passed away on Thursday, November 11, 2010 in her Atlanta, Georgia home following a prolonged illness.

Carolyn D. was a loving mother to her four children and a devoted wife to her husband Asa, Sr. She had a distinguished career in service to Atlanta and Georgia communities. Marge was born in Detriot, Michigan to Henry Steward Dunbar and Annie Louise Dye Dunbar. She graduated from Wayne State University in 1941 with a Bachelor of Arts in Education and Social Work. Carolyn D. directed tireless energies into teaching in the Detroit Public Schools.

She married Asa G. Yancey, Sr., M.D. on December 28, 1944 in Plymouth Congregational Church. This was followed by the birth and rearing of four children in Tuskegee, Alabama. Marge and Asa moved to Atlanta in 1958.

She served in the P.T.A. at Frank L. Stanton Elementary School, Booker T. Washington High School, and Henry W. Grady High School. Marge served on the Gate City Day Nursery Association Board of Directors, the Spelman College Board of Trustees (1972-1999) and the Wesley Community Center Board of Directors.

She was elected to the Atlanta Board of Education in 1982 serving in five different positions over sixteen years. Governor Joe Frank Harris appointed her to the Georgia University System Board of Regents in 1985 for a full term. Carolyn D. Yancey was the first African American woman to serve on the Georgia Board of Regents. She worked simultaneously on all three boards (Spelman College, Atlanta Public Schools, and Georgia Regents).

She worked with the National Conference of Christians and Jews (NCCJ), Blue Star Camping Unlimited, The Atlanta Women's Chamber of Commerce, The Atlanta Chapter of the United Nations International Children's Educational Fund (UNICEF), The Tatnall Street YMCA, The Atlanta Municipal Market and the Public Broadcasting Association of Greater Atlanta, Inc.

She served as President of the Atlanta Chapter of Links, Inc. and the Auxiliary to the Atlanta Medical Association. She also became a member of the League of Women Voters, the Friends of Spelman, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., the Engle Road Civic Association, the Atlanta Symphony Association, the Atlanta Urban League, and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP).

Celebration of Life Service will be held on Wednesday, November 17, 2010 at 1PM at Friendship Baptist Church, 437 Mitchell Street, The Rev. Dr. Timothy T. Boddie, Pastor/Officiating.
