Johanna was the 10th child of Archibald and Annie McDonell.
She married John Gillies on the 26th September 1854, at Kyneton, Victoria, Australia.
After the birth of their 2 daughters they came to New Zealand, and set up a business in the Rangitikei with Johanna's brother. They went back to Asutralia, Brisbane, where John set up a drapery business in Brunswick Street, Brisbane.

GILLIES - On the 27th September at her residence Brunswick Street, Brisbane, Johanna the beloved wife of J.Gillies, Draper; much regretted. May she rest in peace.
Buried in the Toowong Cemetery, Portion 7, Section 39, Grave No. 15.
