She married John Gillies on the 26th September 1854, at Kyneton, Victoria, Australia.
After the birth of their 2 daughters they came to New Zealand, and set up a business in the Rangitikei with Johanna's brother. They went back to Asutralia, Brisbane, where John set up a drapery business in Brunswick Street, Brisbane.
