John's brother Edward and his wife Edith Hanagan lost their lives in 1914 when the ship Empress of Ireland sank. John's 7-year-old niece Grace (Edward and Edith's daughter) however survived the sinking and he became her legal guardian. Edward is also in this cemetery. His body was recovered but his wife's was not. John and Edward were the sons of Edward Thomas Hanagan , a labourer (bricklayer) born in March 1855 in the Lambeth area of London, and Fanny Clewlow (nee Cropp; b. September 1853 at Southampton, Hampshire, England) Hanagan, who had married in the spring of 1875 at Croydon, Surrey England.
