John Andrew Field was the third son and seventh of eight children born to Elswick Sherwood Field (1808-1867) and Guilianna L. Lindsay (1807-1885) who were married in Guilford County, NC in 1831. John was married Oct. 26, 1865, in Gaston Co., NC, to Mary Adeline Wilkinson, a daughter of William R. Wilkinson and Mary Amanda DeWeese. They lived at Coddle Creek, in the DeWeese section of Cabarrus County, NC, named for her maternal ancestors. John Andrew and Mary Adeline had six children: Ernest Marion Field (1866-1902, m. Mary Rhetta Bell), Elizabeth Lavinia Field (1870-1933), Charles Presley Field (1872-1924, m. Ila Juanita Hill), Mary E. Lindsay Field (1874-1875), John Elswick Field (1877-1956) and Louis Edgar Field (1882-1943, m. Mabel).
