Valentine "Val" Schafer, 89, died Sept. 1, 1999, in the Mandan nursing home. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Spirit of Life Catholic Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Cyprian Meier officiating. Burial will be in Mandan Union Cemetery.

Valentine was born Dec. 3, 1909, in Fallon, the son of John and Magdalen (Hoerner) Schafer. He was raised and educated in the Fallon area. On April 10, 1934, he married Elizabeth Jantzer in Fallon. She died in 1959. On May 25, 1963, he married Veronica (Olheiser) Wetsch at St. Joseph's Church in Mandan.

Valentine farmed and ranched in Fallon until 1949. Later on, he worked as a custodian at St. Joseph's School and at the Lewis and Clark Hotel. He then worked at Mandan Transfer until his retirement.

He was a member of K.C. Club, Eagles Club, St. Vincent Verein and St. Anthony Verein.

He is survived by his wife, Veronica; four daughters and sons-in-law, Johanna and Marvin Olson, Max, Josephine and Matt Erhardt, Center, Edith and Jim Hellman, West Fargo, and Pauline and Art Hellman, Glen Ullin; three stepsons and two stepdaughters-in-law, Dave Wetsch, and Jim and Jean Wetsch, all of Mandan, and George and Jan Wetsch, Bismarck; 24 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; eight step-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren; and one sister-in-law, Frances Schafer, Billings, Mont.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Elizabeth; one infant son, Raymond; one grandson; three great-grandsons; four brothers; and five sisters.
