Lyman Bean was a troubled youth, and served 10 months in the House of Corrections when he was 17, having stolen some wearing apparel from a store. He was given a five month sentence, and appealed it, and it was then doubled to ten months. But it turned his life around.

He served in the Civil War, enlisting in the New Hampshire 1st Light Artillery Battery on September 26, 1861. He was accidentally wounded and died on June 8, 1864, at 25 years of age. He left a widow, Annie.
