When the Civil War began, he mustered into the Union Army on May 7, 1861. He was a Sergt with the 1st NH Heavy Artillery and fought in the Battle of Fredericksburg. He mustered out on June 9, 1865, in Manchester, NH. He must have gone home on leave, as he married in Manchester on March 5, 1864 to Mary Ann Walcott. They had 2 sons, Walter Lyman Bean born April 24, 1868, in New Jersey, and Willis H. Bean born July 27, 1869, in Lowell, Massachusetts.
He received a Civil War pension.
After the war, Leroy worked in a mill as a "loom fixer"; his DC states he probably died of malaria.
