Deaths

Died, in this city, July 2, 1898, Mr. Eugene M. Ewing, aged about 53 years.

The death of Mr. Ewing was quite a shock to his numerous friends in this city and county. He had been will with an attack of pneumonia for some time, but was not considered in any danger; but, on the contrary, was thought to be much better the evening before his death, and seemed very bight and cheerful, conversing with the friends who came in to see him. He died very suddenly, of heart failure, about 8 o'clock the next morning. His brother and his colored attendant were with him, and he asked the nurse to raise him, then to lay him down, and then again to raise his head, which was done. They saw that he was worse, and went at once for his physician, but when the doctor reached him the spirit had taken its flight.

His loss is deeply felt by many friends who had been with him, and who had been helped by witnessing his cheerfulness and uncomplaining fortitude under very trying circumstances, and his patience in his long continued and severe affliction. His funeral services were held at the Presbyterian church, in this city, Sunday afternoon, at 2 o'clock.

Mr. Ewing was well known to the citizens of this county, where he was born and has spent his entire life. During the war he served in the confederate army. About twenty-four years ago he received a severe wound, the bullet lodging near his spine, producing paralysis. After three months, however, he partially recovered, and was able to go around for about nine years, when he again had a stroke which completely paralyzed his lower limbs. For the past fifteen years he has been blind and almost helpless, but has been tenderly cared for by friends who did all they could to brighten his life and relieve the tedium of long hours of suffering. He learned typewriting, and by means of work brought to him by friends, was able partly to support himself.

His sufferings here are ended, and he is at rest in that home prepared by the Father for those who love Him.
