Biography:
George Harrison St Clair

George Harrison St Clair was the first child of George and Mary Spendlove St Clair. Family records show that he was born in Ogden, Utah on 3 February 1868. The family did not live in that area long though, and George spent the majority of his life in Ophir, Utah.
At the time his family moved to Ophir, it was a booming mining town. George received his education from the local elementary school, finishing through the eighth grade. This education was supplemented at home by his mother in the evenings. The St Clair family always had books.
When George was twenty-seven his father died leaving his mother a widow with three young children still at home. George became the patriarch of the family and, along with his two adult brothers, helped to support the family. Records show that he was the administrator of his father's estate.
George met Minnie O'Rourke while he was working in a mine in Stockton, Utah. They were married in the Catholic Church in Stockton on Oct 26, 1891. Their first child, a boy, died soon after birth in Stockton. Tragedy struck again at the birth of their second child. Minnie O'Rourke St. Clair died on September 5, 1894, 24 days after giving birth to a daughter. For several months afterwards, George was not his cheerful self. Initially George approached his wife's mother about helping him to raise his daughter, but as she wanted more money than he had, George took her back to his mother's home in Ophir.
George worked as a miner on his own claims, and later became a mine promoter, often traveling to Nevada and Idaho.
George's grandson recalls that his grandfather always gave money to his daughter, Minnie, to pay the Tooth Fairy when one of the grandchildren lost a tooth. One day he met his daughter's family in Salt Lake City and took them all out to dinner. After they were through eating he left a quarter tip for the waitress. At the time it seemed a huge amount of money to his grandson.
George died in Ophir in 1936 at the age of 70.
