STATESBORO — Mr. Elwood Marcelle Thompson Sr., age 81, died Sunday morning at his residence. The native and lifelong resident of Bulloch County was a 1949 graduate of Portal High School. Shortly after his graduation, he joined the U.S. Navy, in which he served for four years. Marcelle farmed and also owned and operated S&T Shoe Store and Thompson's Furniture for many years. Additionally, he was a school bus driver with the Bulloch County Board of Education for 25 years, retiring in 1996. He attended Bethlehem Primitive Baptist Church and Cornerstone Church. Marcelle was most proud of his accomplishment of 45 years of sobriety. He was a member of the Garfield AA Group. He was known for his love of talking and visiting with friends and always had a story to tell.

Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Bobbie Anderson Thompson of Statesboro; two daughters and sons-in-law, Debbie "Dianne" and Don Roberts of Franklin, N.C., and Lucy and Tracy Smith of Statesboro; two sons and daughters-in-law, Elwood and Rita Thompson of Portal and Cheze and Dee Dee Thompson of Statesboro; six grandchildren, Clay, Cru, Savannah, Riley and Reid Thompson and Dustin Terrell; and two great-grandchildren, Payton and Avery.

The funeral service will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Bethlehem Primitive Baptist Church with the Rev. Dan Joyner officiating, assisted by Elder Spencer Moore. Interment will be in the church cemetery.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Garfield AA Group and Bulloch County retired bus drivers.
