Margaret (Eakins) Moore
Margaret Eakins, born in 1799, Londonderry, Londonderry County, Northern Ireland, immigrated with her Scotch-Irish parents, Andrew Eakins and Ann (Horne) Eakins, at age 3 in 1802, on the same ship as the family of James Barnett Moore and his wife, Mary Ann (Lindsey) Moore. First they landed in Philadelphia, PA, where they could work in the weaving trade in factories in the city. They moved to Chester or Lancaster County, PA, before moving again to Nitanny Valley in Centre and Clinton Counties. Andrew Eakins became a pioneer settler in what became Porter Township, Clinton County, PA. He served in the Company of William Alexander of Belefonte, Centre County, PA, in the War of 1812. This makes all descendants of Margaret (Eakins) Moore eligible for membership in the Daughters of the War of 1812.
Margaret Eakins married Andrew Moore (born April 24, 1790), son of James Barnett Moore (b. 1756) and Mary Ann (Lindsey) Moore in 1818 in Centre County, PA, where both families settled for awhile. Andrew Moore also served as a soldier in the War of 1812. Andrew Moore and his wife, Margaret, along with their six children bought a farm near Bellefonte, now part of Centre County, PA. During this time he farmed and also worked at Washington Furnace.
Andrew Moore and his wife, Margaret (Eakins) Moore and their six children moved to the Beechwoods settlement in Washington Township, Jefferson County, PA, around 1834. He gave his reason for moving was that "Nitanny Valley was not a fit place to raise a family." Two additional children were born in the Beechwoods. His farm was originally rough wilderness, and had to cut a road through the forest to the spring near which he built his house and out buldings. Cattle, sheep and hogs roamed the range, so it was necessary to build substantial fences around every field that was cultivated. In addition, Andrew and Margaret made sugar from the maple trees on his property. This farm was located near the current Dubois-Jefferson County Airport.
Margaret died January 17, 1850, Washington Township, Jefferson County, PA, at age 51. Her husband, Andrew Moore, died July 24, 1877, age 89, 3 months. Both are buried in the Beechwoods Cemetery, Falls Creek, Jefferson County, PA, near the Beechwoods Presbyterian Church.
Her husband, her sons, James Lindsey Moore, Edward Miles Moore, David Barnett Moore, Andrew Eakins Moore, Jacob Ramsey Moore, her daughters, Frances Williard (Moore) Best, Mary Ann (Moore) Stewart, and Margaret Nancy (Moore) Gaul, survived her.
Her parents, Andrew Eakins and Ann (Horne) Eakins, predeceased her.
