Reuben served in the Union Army during the Civil war, as A Private, Company I, 42nd Illinois Infantry. He enlisted 29 September 1864 at Cairo, Illinois, and was wounded in the left shoulder at the Battle of Franklin/Spring Hill, Tennessee. He was discharged on June 13, 1865 at New Albany, Indiana.
He filed for Veterans Pension, 26 May 1865, App#69645, Cert#47748
Wife's veteran Pension was filed, 27 March 1905, App#824987, Cert#595554
Reuben C. Tanquary, born 15 September 1827 in Wabash County, Illinois, was the son of Fielding and Elizabeth (Beauchamp) Tanquary. In 1849, he was wed to Margaret Rigg, the daughter of Robert Hanna and Elizabeth (McCleary) Rigg. To this union were born Sarah Elizabeth, Harriet, and Allen Fletcher.
Reuben and Margaret farmed several hundred acres southeast of Bellmont, Illinois. They are now resting in the south portion of Bethel Cemetery, land they donated from a corner section of their farm. After the Civil War, he returned to farming and raising horses, but was always bothered with a lame shoulder.
