"Susan Griffin -- A Pioneer Passes
Susan Alma Everton was born November 30, 1871 near Blue Earth City in Fairbault (sic Faribault) county, Minn., the eldest daughter of Thomas J. and Mary Jane Everton. The family moved to a farm near Crofton, Cedar county, Nebr., in the summer of 1874 when Everton purchased an 80 acre tract of land.
In 1887 the family sold their farm and came to Oregon by railroad. For the first few months they lived within the city of Grants Pass where Susan attended the Grants Pass Academy under Professor Benson.
GRADUATION
Upon graduation from the Academy, Susan, then 18, taught school in what is now the Dimmick district during the years 1891 (I think there is something missing or mixed up in this part of the obit) and Nellie Everton, 7, died of diptheria and was the second person to be buried in what is now the IOOF cemetery east of the city. In 1892 the family moved to a farm, previously purchased, near the present Robertson bridge on the Rogue river adjacent to the Everton riffle.
Susan Everton was married October 26, 1898, to George H. Griffin, son of William and Mary Griffin, who came to the Rogue River valley in 1852. The wedding took place at the home of the bride's brother, the late Elmer Everton, on East F street. The couple moved to a farm in the present Shan Creek area where they lived for several years before moving to the Griffin family home on Griffin road near the old Griffin ferry across the Rogue above the Robertson bridge site.
Two sons, Dale Griffin, of Dallas, and Merle Griffin, of Grants Pass, and three daughters, Mrs. Audrey Conrad and Mrs. Alma Fairfield, of Grants Pass, and Mrs. Gladys Hagar of Bremerton, Wash., were born to the Griffins.
MOVED
In 1937 the Griffins moved from the family home on Griffin road to the Fruitdale area and in 1942 they again moved into Grants Pass, where they were living at the time of Mrs. Griffin's death December 26.
In addition to the sons and daughters Mrs. Griffin leaves her husband, George H. Griffin; two brothers, P. T. Everton and J. W. Everton; and a sister, Mrs. Margaret Osborne, all of Grants Pass; 10 grandchildren, and two great grandchildren.
Susan Everton Griffin was a member of the Church of God for over 50 years and had accepted Christ as her saviour at the age of 17. Her death is the first in the Griffin family since her marriage 49 years ago. All the children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, as well as her husband, survive her."
