In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his first wife of 49 years, Rose Frederick Long; his son, Robin Cothran Long; three brothers, Talmadge Long, Thomas Long and Charles Long.
Mr. Long worked for Kirby & Long Gas Company then he went to work for Public Service Company of NC. He was co-owner and operator of Thomas Long's Steak House in South Boston, VA and Long's Steak House in Bedford, VA, he also worked for The Old Country Club Steak House and retired at the age 75. He was a U.S. Army Veteran having served from 1953 through 1955 in England and he was a member of Lamberth Memorial Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Janet Barrett Hatcher Long of the home; one daughter, Rana Howle and husband, Tucky; one son, Flemmie Ray Long Jr. and wife, Judy; two-step-daughters, Kimberly Hatcher, Suzette Hunley and husband, Ronnie; one sister, Margaret Kirby, all of Roxboro; nine grandchildren, Rosemarie Howle Ellis, Carrie Dail Howle, Thomas Howle IV., Jimmy Ray Long, Robin Long, Amber Ellixson, Jenny Humphries, Brandon Nelson, Nick Long; four great-grandchildren, David Holt, Hannah Holt, Austin McKinney, Bailey Rae Long; one step-granddaughter, Barrett Hunley; one step-great granddaughter, Codi-Layne Ellixson also survive.
Funeral Services will be held 3 p.m. Sunday, September 9, 2012 at Lamberth Memorial Baptist Church by the Rev. Gerald Thomas and the Rev. Herman Absher. Interment will follow at Person Memorial Cemetery.
