Annie and Joe didn't have any children. They both died in California and their bodies were brought back to Missouri to be buried in St. John's Cemetery in Dover.
Annie was crippled since she was a young woman of 20 and was totally dependent on her husband. Her husband Joseph was a retired city street maintenance worker and just about every night he took Annie for a ride in their old car, tenderly helping her down the steps from their rented duplex. A policeman who remembered their happy smiles as the rode by said, "They were always together. She was totally dependent on him. She could walk only with his help. He took her out almost every night when the weather was nice."
Neigbors became worried when they hadn't seen the devoted couple in some time. They tried riging the doorbell and banging on windows with no response. A policeman was called and he finally forced open the front door. He made his way to the single bedroom and there found Joseph and Annie on the floor, together in death as they were in life.
Coroner's deputies arrived on the scene and reported preliminary examination indicated Joseph had been dead for 10 days and Mary for about 6. Indications were, they said, that Joseph was stricken with a hemorrhage in the front room and staggered into the bedroom to try to reach his wife. He collapsed near the bed and as he lay there dying, his wife managed to crawl from the bed and collapsed over him. Her death, it was indicated, was due to dehydration. She had lain there unattended for four days before she succumbed.
