August H. Matthes was on his way home last Thursday from taking his children to school in his Chevrolet car when he was struck by the motor car and killed. After taking the children to school he had gone to Malcolm to do some trading before going home. His body was brought to the Chain & Wood undertaking parlors in Seward after the accident and prepared for burial. It was later taken to the home near Malcolm, and funeral services were held at the Elk Slough church at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon, with burial in the cemetery at Garland.
The deceased would have been 42 years of age on March 18th next. He was married to Minnie Schaefer in 1919. Besides his wife he is survived by three children. There are also three brothers, Louis, whose whereabouts are unknown, and R.A. and Wm. Matthes of Garland, and one sister, Mrs. Wm. Hasse, who lived near Seward. He is also survived by his stepmother, Mrs. Ida B. Matthes, and half-brothers and sisters as follows: Adolph, Fred, Herman, Carl, Albert and Walter; Paul and Otto, twins; Arnold, and Mrs. Arnold Lange.
