W. R. Cofer Sr.

A funeral for Wesley Randolf Cofer, Sr. of Newport News [VA], who died Thursday, will be conducted at 3 p.m. today in First Baptist Church by the Rev. William L. Tomlinson, Dr. Paul K. Buckles and the Rev. Douglas G. Burgoyne.

Burial will be in Peninsula Memorial Park.

Mr. Cofer, a retired Newport News automobile dealer and one of the Peninsula's most prominent sports enthusiasts, was the father of Judge Wesley R. Cofer, Jr. of Hampton [VA].

Other survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Marjorie G. Skiles of Jacksonville, Fla.; two sisters, Mrs. Lina C. Batten of Nashville, Tenn., and Mrs. Lillian C. Hearn of Lancaster, Calif.; a brother, Paul D. Cofer of Norfolk; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

The family is at the residence, 104 Villa Road, Newport News, and requests expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to the American Cancer Society or a favorite charity.

Jennell Funeral Home is in charge.

In the book, "The Good Old Days in Hampton and Newport News" (Dietz Press, Richmond, VA, 1986), author Parke Rouse Jr. recalls that "my friend Wesley Cofer used to say that food tasted better from 'the old country', as he called Isle of Wight and Surry. I think he was right".
