Spc. Casey Casteel Jackson, 21, of Belle Vernon, died Tuesday, September 4, 2012, in Chapel Hill, N.C., following a 16-month battle with Ewing's Sarcoma, surrounded by his family.
He was born February 14, 1991, in Carroll Township, a son of Gerald II and Kristen Peters Jackson of Belle Vernon.
A 2009 graduate of Belle Vernon Area High School, he attended Penn State University before entering the U.S. Army in June 2010.
Spc. Jackson completed basic training at Fort Benning, Ga., and underwent additional training at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., and Fort Benning before being assigned to the 307th Engineer Battalion, 919th Engineer Support Company (Airborne) at Fort Bragg, N.C.
He was a member of Fayette City United Methodist Church and Tri-County Masonic Lodge.
Spc. Jackson loved his job as a U.S. soldier and took it very seriously. He truly seemed to have found his niche when he enlisted in the Army. He had looked forward to serving his country at the next level, as his unit is being deployed to Afghanistan in the near future.
Surviving, in addition to his parents, are three sisters, Rachel Jackson of Belle Vernon and Sara and Rebecca Jackson, both of Durham, N.C.; paternal grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Gerald W. Jackson Sr. of Belle Vernon; three aunts, Kim Peters Moninger of Nineveh, Karen Peters (Mary Sue Ramsden) of Forward Township and Deborah (Richard) DiMascio of Monessen; and five cousins, Matthew and Gregory Moninger and Richard, David and Joseph DiMascio.
Deceased are his maternal grandparents, the Rev. Robert L. and Shirley Peters.
He faced his illness with bravery and a level of maturity beyond his years. His care and concern for what his family was going through was highly unselfish and admirable. He was loved, admired and respected by many, and he will be sadly and profoundly missed.
Friends will be received from 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday and 2 to 8 p.m. Monday in Fayette City United Methodist Church, Fourth Street, Fayette City, PA 15438, where services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, September 11, 2012, with the Rev. Dr. Glenn Kohlhepp, the Rev. Lois Thomas and Pastor Vann Walchock co-officiating. Burial service will full military rites will take place at 10 a.m. Tuesday, September 11, in Greene Grove Cemetery, Greene County. Masonic service will be held 4:30 p.m. Monday in the church.
