Edwin was a chair maker, the son of Samuel [of Stowe, MA] & Ruth (Lawrence) Gates.

Enlisted as Private from Fitchburg: Co. A, Mass 53rd Inf Regt., Aug 25, 1862. Mustered out Sep 2, 1863 at Camp Stevens, Groton, MA.

Re-enlisted on Oct 8, 1864; and

Enlisted in Co. H, Mass 4th Heavy Artillery Regiment on Aug 20, 1864.

Mustered out Jun 17, 1865 at Washington, D.C.

The 1890 vet's schedule shows 1 year, 7 days service with Co A, 53rd Inf; 1 year, 1 month with Co H, H.A. It further states he was suffering from "Rheumatics (kidney trouble)".

Applied for military pension Jun 23, 1885;
Minerva Gates applied as widow Dec 18, 1902.
