Joseph served as a Private First Class, Company B, 1st Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division, U.S. Army during the Korean War.

He resided in New Castle, Delaware prior to the war.

He was declared "Missing in Action: while fighting the enemy in North Korea and was awarded a Purple Heart.
