Sam Clayton, the son of Samuel & Susannah Morris Clayton, was christened September 30th, 1685, at Abingdon Parish, Gloucester County, Virginia. The actual day or year for that matter of his birth, is unknown.
Later in life, he served as a vestryman and justice in Essex County.
His Will dated 16 Jan 1734;
Probate: 19 Aug 1735 Essex Co. VA
In the Name of God Amen. I, Sam Clayton of the Parish of South Farnham & County of Essex, being very sick & weak but of sound mind & memory do constitute this to be my Last Will & Testament in manner following Impri-mne I recommend my soul into the hands of my Blessed Redeemer hoping through the merits of my blessed Savior to obtain
perfect remission of my soul & my body to be Interred at the direction of my Executrix & Executor & what worldly goods it had pleased God to bestow upon me, my debts being first paid, I give and bequeath as followeth: Viz.
1st., I give and bequeath unto my loving son George Clayton one part or parsole of land, lying & being in Essex County on the South Side of Piscataway Brook bounded by the Land of Col. John Robinson & Given to him & his heirs forever.
2ndly, I give and bequeath unto my loving son Philip Clayton one negro boy named Tommy also my great riding coat to him & his heirs forever.
3rdly, I give & bequeath unto my loving son Samuel Clayton five negroes or to the value of fifty pounds current money to him & his heirs forever
4thly., I give & bequeath unto my loving son John Clayton five negroes or to the value of fifty pounds current money to him & his heirs forever
5thly., I give & bequeath unto my loving daughters, Elizabeth Anderson & Lucy Clayton five negroes to each of them & their heirs forever.
6thly. I Lend & Bequeath unto my loving wife Elizabeth Clayton all the rest of my Estate real & personall during the time of her widowhood. If she should marry then to surrender all the aforesaid estate to my eldest son Phil Clayton who is hereby required to divide it equally amongst my six children before named.
Lastly I do hereby appoint my loving wife Elizabeth Clayton Executrix jointly with my loving son Phil Clayton Executor of this my Last Will & Testament at Witness my hand & Seal this Sixteenth day of Jan'y one thousand Seven hundred & thirty-four.
