Robert T Broadbent
1933~2012
The following was written by Robert prior to his death: Robert T Broadbent, born Oct. 21, 1933; [died Sept. 3, 2012]. I began life in Santaquin UT as the son of Leon and Norma Taylor Broadbent. My parents divorced early in my life and I lived a good portion of my early years with my grandparents, Bill and Agnus Broadbent of Santaquin. (They were parents to me, God bless them.) In my early teens, I moved to Provo UT to live with my mother and her husband Curg Madsen. I attended both Junior and High School in Provo. I worked at B & H Pharmacy, then PE Ashton Chevrolet in the Parts, Sales, and Service Dept. In 1955 I took a tour in the United States Navy. Not long after returning, I became dissatisfied with life and after learning to fly at Jense Flying School, I borrowed all the money I could and moved to Oklahoma to pursue a career in aviation. Following training, I moved to S Dakota to work as a Flight Instructor, Charter Pilot, and Crop Sprayer. It was there that I met this beautiful wildflower by the name of Shirley. She had one broken wing, as did I. We teamed up and with her good left wing and my good right wing; working together we have truly soared through life. Doesn't 46+ years prove we've been good for each other? We started our journey by purchasing the airport where I had worked; we managed the operations for seven years. I was then offered a job by the Federal Aviation Administration and we moved to N Dakota. Seven years later, I was transferred to the Salt Lake City FAA office in 1973 and completed my career with the FAA at the Salt Lake City Flights Standards District Office, retiring as the supervisor of the Geographic Section. I was most fortunate to be able to make my living at something I loved to do. After Shirley's passing in 2008, I met a lovely lady by the name of Helen Cram—she is now a Broadbent and I want her to know how much I appreciated her in completing the final years of my life. She's a good sport—she likes to go places and even ride motorcycles. Now, besides Helen, I am survived by daughters Lori Van Straten, and Debbie Linam. Also a brother David Broadbent and two sisters: Leonda Hancock and Susan Weiler; also, a bunch of great Grandkids.
Now, I have never been known for being a conformist, and I am adamant that that my services will not be the same old boo hoo. Come celebrate my life and see my snapshots (who knows, you might be in them!) along with some snappy music. The organ will remain unplugged. See you there! Robert.
The funeral services will be held on Saturday, September 8, 2012, at 2:00 p.m. at the Redwood Memorial Mortuary (801-969-3456), 6500 South Redwood Road, West Jordan, Utah. Viewing for friends and family will be from 12:30 p.m. to 1:45 p.m. that same day.
