Dr. Caleb Wadhams Ensign studied medicine with Dr. Dorrance of Dalton, Massachusetts, practiced his profession at Washington and Dalton, Massachusetts. Married Orpah Deming October 6, 1813. Orpah's mother was a Kellogg, follow her line for the connection to Gov. Bradford and the Mayflower...Ensign, Deming, Kellogg, Hosmer, Steele, Bradford.
Dr. Ensign was very successful in both medicine and farming; he was Representative from Dalton in the Massachusetts State Legislature, two terms, 1836 and 1837. He was secretary of the Dalton Social Library, 1816-1828.
In 1840, he removed with his family, except Horace and Electa, to Madison, Lake County, Ohio, where his wife held interest in lands inherited from her father; they in time, held lands in Portage, Geauga, and Ashtabula Counties. The Lake Shore Road passed through his land and he took railroad stock for his compensation, so that he was able to educate his large family and to allow each son one thousand dollars at the age of 21, and each daughter five hundred dollars on marriage.
After coming to Madison, he devoted himself to farming and fruit growing. He was liberal in church and educational matters, and an enthusiastic member of the Horticultural Society. He was Representative from his district in the Ohio State Legislature 1858-9. He died at the age of 92 years, having enjoyed an active, healthy life; and having acquired a "very respectable estate".
