Oliver John Semmes was born at Norfolk, VA, August 29, 1839, son of Raphael Semmes and Anne E. Spencer. Raphael Semmes was an admiral of the Confederate States Navy, commander of the Sumter and the Alabama. Judge Semmes himself, also served throughout the civil war.
Judge Semmes, who for forty years was a judge in the court system of Mobile, died there on Jan. 19, 1918. Although in ill health he was re-elected to his unbroken record February of 1917, but shortly afterward retired. During his lifetime, he was a prominent Odd Fellow and Knight of Pythias.
At the time of his passing, he was survived by one son, Judge Olive J Semmes, Jr of Pensacola; one daughter, Mrs Amante Semmes Finley, of Memphis Tennessee; three sisters: Mrs Electra Semmes Colsson of Mobile; Mrs Luke Wright of Memphis, Tennessee and Mrs Charles B Bryan of Memphis; one brother: Raphael Semmes, of Montgomery, Alabama, several grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.
