Three Girls Die of Asphyxiation
DENMARK - Three teenage girls found dead here Sunday were killed by carbon monoxide poisoning, according to Bamberg County Coroner Dr. N. J. Knoy.
The girls were found early Monday in the apartment of one of the victims, Joyce Hanberry, 19, of Denmark. The other two girls were identified as Bonnie Ruth Bates, 18, of Orangeburg and Lynn Strickland, 18, of Denmark.
Dr. Knoy said apparently the two girls were spending the night with Miss Hanberry. He said his investigation indicates the girls died from exposure to carbon monoxide, which was given off by the gas heater because of poor ventilation.
Authorities found the bodies early Monday after one of the girls failed to return home. Officers went to the apartment at the urging of one of the girl's father.
The coroner said the girls probably died about noon Sunday. He has ruled the deaths accidental and no inquest is planned . . .
The funeral for Miss Strickland will be 3 p. m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church in Denmark. Burial will be in Denmark Cemetery, directed by Small Funeral Home.
Miss Strickland was born May 26, 1956, in Laurens, a daughter of Walter L. and Mrs. Kate Fowler Strickland. She was a senior at Denmark-Olar High School. She was an employee of Poole's Five and Dime.
Surviving in addition to her parents of Denmark are: three brothers, Joe Strickland, Michael Strickland and Rusty Strickland, all of Denmark; three sisters, Miss Brenda Strickland, Miss Beth Strickland and Miss Penny Strickland, all of Denmark; her maternal grandmother, Mrs. Rachel Brown of Asheville, N. C., her paternal grandfather, I. D. Strickland of Silverstreet.
