Civil War: Company A, 7th California Infantry

Robert Edmund Foresman was living with his mother Jane (1790, PA) and his sisters Sarah (1824, PA), Mary (1822, PA), and Elizabeth (1828, PA), and niece Catharine (1845, PA), at Washington, Pennsylvania, in 1850. Like his father Robert and brother John, he was a carriage maker. He later moved to California where he enlisted as a private for one year at Sacramento September 27, 1864, and was mustered into Company A, 7th California Infantry, September 29. Private Foresman was posted to Arizona Territory where he was mustered out at Maricopa Wells November 17, 1865 (Orton, 768). Robert married Sarah Maria Schermerhorn at La Porte, Indiana, in 1875. He filed for a Civil War veteran's pension at Denver, Colorado, January 6, 1892, and received application No. 1,084,019 and certificate No. 986,095. Robert was still living at Denver in 1900 with his wife Sarah, daughter Margaret Jane (Foresman) Lennon (June 26, 1878, IN - May 20, 1954, MI), son-in-law William E. Lennon, and grand-daughter Charlotte Marie Lennon (April 24, 1899, CO). Sometime thereafter he moved to Nottawa, Michigan, where he remained until he died. After his death Sarah filed for a widow's pension at Nottawa March 27, 1918, and received application No. 1,117,791 and certificate No. 855,458.
